Dear President Daniels:
We have learned of an incident where a Johns Hopkins graduate student was alleged to have been physically and verbally attacked on the basis of her support for and affinity with Israel. Per reporting in the Times of Israel[1], the student Noga Mudrik was “hit by a girl holding a Palestinian flag, right at the campus entrance” and was shouted at “to go back to Europe”. The story goes on to report that there were signs on the Johns Hopkins campus declaring that “Zionism upholds Nazi ideology” and that there was a sign declaring love for Hamas. We understand that the Office of Institutional Equity is following up in accordance with the JHU policy/procedures.
We are proud that Johns Hopkins University is deeply committed to the dignity and equality of all persons—inclusive of sex, gender, marital status, pregnancy, race, color, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and veteran status[2]. The actions reported in the article are not in keeping with that commitment.
Zionism is the movement for the self-determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland, the land of Israel[3]. Many of us are Zionists. Equating our beliefs with Nazism is not in keeping with the Johns Hopkins commitment to dignity. Some of us have family or friends that have been murdered or held hostage by Hamas or have had family members murdered by Nazis. Many of us have experienced fear of being attacked by that group, simply because of religious affiliation or travel to Israel. Signs expressing love for Hamas, a US-designated foreign terrorist organization (FTO)[4], create an environment where we do not feel safe.
There should be zero tolerance and no place in the Hopkins community of faculty, staff, and students for this type of behavior.
We respectfully request to be updated on the results of the investigations into the allegations and on specific actions that the University is taking to ensure that the dignity and equality of all persons are upheld at Johns Hopkins. This must include those who are identifiably Jewish and those who have affinity for, or affiliation with, the State of Israel.
